The main focal point to any coffee table styling moment is the actual coffee table. You’ll want to choose one that fits the space proportionally. 12 to 18 inches away from any seating and at least 24 inches ( I prefer closer to 30 inches) from a tv or fireplace. Also consider material, wood is obviously the most popular choice, but stone, like travertine or marble, seems to be trending lately. You could even do a oversized ottoman to bring in a cozier, more lived in vibe. Last week I put together The Ultimate Coffee Table Roudup. There’s something for every style and every budget, so be sure to check it out!
Usually the first thing I add when I’m styling my coffee table is a stack of books… or maybe a few. They help anchor groupings of smaller items and it’s an easy way to add varying heights, which is usually more pleasing to the eye. Books also make a space feel more casual & inviting to me, like, “come on in, sit down and cozy up!” You can find 26 my favorite coffee table books here, plus 3 tips for styling and my favorite places to purchase from.
Once I have a few stacks of books on the table I like to add vessels. That can mean a pretty vase with stems, a vintage pot, a small basket, a bowl with beads, a tray, or even a cute box to stash items like the remote in. Clearly the options are endless here. Vessels are my favorite way to bring variety to the table.
Fresh greenery or faux, I always add some type of stem to every space in our home. It makes it feel more “alive” and less like the display at Target. Add more earthy tones in the fall, like burgundy or brown. Dried stems are also an excellent option for the fall & winter months.
Finally objects add a collected and lived in feel to coffee table styling. Try stacking them on books to create a grouping. Some of my favorite objects are candles & match holders, a book display with magnifying glass, beads or a vintage bell.
